Avenda Health, an AI-driven healthcare firm, claims its software can identify the extent of prostate cancer with greater precision than traditional methods employed by doctors. In a recent study involving a cohort of ten physicians assessing 50 distinct prostate cancer cases, Avenda’s Unfold AI software demonstrated an impressive accuracy rate of 84.7%. In comparison, the participating doctors achieved accuracy rates ranging from 67.2% to 75.9%.

Published in the Journal of Urology, the study—conducted in collaboration with UCLA Health—highlighted that employing AI in cancer contouring led to size predictions that were 45 times more accurate and consistent compared to manual assessments. Shyam Natarajan, an assistant adjunct professor in urology, surgery, and bioengineering at UCLA, noted the advantage of AI in enhancing both the accuracy and consistency of diagnostic decisions among doctors.

While MRI scans are commonly utilized to gauge tumor sizes, certain tumors may be undetectable on MRI scans. Dr. Wayne Brisbane, an assistant professor of urology at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, emphasized that AI could illuminate areas where traditional imaging falls short, enhancing the overall effectiveness of cancer treatment. He mentioned that AI’s capabilities could lead to more personalized and successful treatment strategies, tailored to meet individual patient needs.

Prostate cancer poses a significant risk, with the American Cancer Society estimating that approximately 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed during their lifetime. This year alone, around 299,010 new cases are projected, with an estimated 35,250 fatalities attributed to the disease.
