Patients in regions such as Rewa, Nakasi, Makoi, Korovou, and Naitasiri are set to experience improved diagnostic services with the recent installation of a state-of-the-art digital radiology machine at Nausori Health Centre. This upgrade is designed to enhance the speed and accuracy of diagnostic results for local communities.
The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, introduced the new $200,000 system, which replaces outdated analogue technology that has been in use since 1997. This modernization aims to expedite the diagnostic process while significantly decreasing the travel time and associated delays that families encounter when seeking medical care.
Dr. Lalabalavu pointed out that the advanced system features artificial intelligence software, which helps clinicians deliver quicker and more precise diagnoses. This innovation is expected to significantly reduce the number of patients needing to journey to Suva for scans. He expressed that this upgrade represents more than just new equipment; it reflects a dedication to providing timely and comprehensive healthcare for the communities.
Additionally, the installation at Nausori Health Centre is part of a larger initiative, with plans underway to implement similar digital systems at 21 selected locations across the country. Notable facilities slated to receive the technology include CWM Hospital, Taveuni, and Sigatoka.
Senior Biomedical Engineer Ratu Seci Takotavuki stated that the introduction of these digital units will replace traditional manual film processing methods, resulting in enhanced image clarity and improved overall patient care and diagnostic efficiency throughout Fiji. This initiative is a hopeful example of how Fijian healthcare is committed to utilizing technology to achieve better health outcomes for its population.
