Organizers of the McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s are shaking things up for their 14th annual event, set to kick off next week at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, by using artificial intelligence (AI) for the pool draws. This innovative approach comes as the tournament looks to enhance the competitive nature of the matches.

Fans have been buzzing about the intense competition anticipated in the men’s division, particularly in what Tournament Co-Founder Jay Whyte has dubbed “the pool of death.” Group A features powerhouse teams including the Fiji Babas, who are fresh off their last two championships, along with five-time champions Police, the Seattle Barbarians from the USA, and Australia’s Nationwide Sydney Nadi.

Pool C is also generating excitement, comprising teams like USA 7s, Mike Friday Select, Dominion Brothers, and the Chennai Bulls from India, coached by Ben Gollings.

Whyte explained that the AI was provided with specific parameters to ensure an equitable mix of local and international teams. The top national teams were seeded appropriately, and AI handled the rest, showcasing how technology can elevate traditional sports events.

The Coral Coast 7s will commence next Thursday, and fans can catch all the action live and exclusively on FBC Sports. This year’s event promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent and innovation, indicating a bright future for rugby sevens in the region.
