A healthcare technology company, Avenda Health, has announced that its AI software can detect prostate cancer with greater accuracy than traditional methods employed by doctors. According to a recent study involving ten physicians evaluating 50 prostate cancer cases, Avenda’s Unfold AI software achieved an impressive detection accuracy of 84.7%. In comparison, the accuracy of the doctors ranged from 67.2% to 75.9%.
The study, conducted in collaboration with UCLA Health and published in the Journal of Urology, highlighted that the integration of AI in cancer contouring yielded predictions of tumor size that were 45 times more precise. Shyam Natarajan, an assistant adjunct professor of urology and the study’s senior author, noted that utilizing AI assistance not only enhanced the accuracy of the doctors’ assessments but also increased their consistency, resulting in more consensus among them.
Dr. Wayne Brisbane, another contributor to the study, emphasized the significance of AI in situations where MRI scans may not suffice, stating that certain tumors may be “MRI-invisible.” The application of AI could ultimately lead to more effective and personalized treatment plans for prostate cancer patients, as it allows for tailored therapies that better address individual needs.
Avenda Health’s CEO, Dr. Natarajan, shared his enthusiasm about the findings, expressing how validating such innovations through scientific research bolsters confidence among healthcare providers. Currently, prostate cancer poses a significant health risk, with about one in eight men diagnosed in their lifetimes and an estimated 299,010 new cases expected in the U.S. this year alone.
