Agatha’s Dark Journey Begins: What to Expect from *Agatha All Along*

The breakout star of *WandaVision* is set to return in *Agatha All Along*, premiering Wednesday, September 18, with its first two episodes on Disney+. In this new series, Kathryn Hahn reprises her role as Agatha, Westview’s enigmatic witch, although she finds herself temporarily stripped of her powers. The storyline follows a mystery-loving goth teenager, portrayed by Joe Locke, who frees Agatha from a troublesome spell and persuades her to embark on The Witches’ Road, a challenging magical journey that promises to fulfill their deepest desires. However, Agatha must first assemble a coven, a daunting task for someone who has long been a solitary figure.

Jac Schaeffer, who was the head writer for *WandaVision*, leads *Agatha All Along* as showrunner and executive producer. Schaeffer openly admits to her “unhealthy fixation” on the character of Agatha, explaining how the character’s and Wanda’s contrasting traits have made for a captivating narrative. While Wanda carries significant trauma and complexity, Agatha embraces her witchy persona with pride.

Schaeffer aims to blend the elements that made *WandaVision* a hit with a darker tone unique to Agatha’s story. “Agatha All Along is a puzzle-box show filled with mysteries and unexpected twists,” she states. This series departs from the sitcom format of its predecessor but continues to draw inspiration from various films and television shows. She reveals the intention to explore themes of community, as all characters, including Agatha, are described as loners in need of connection.

Hahn expresses her enthusiasm for delving deeper into Agatha’s character, particularly after she played a more subdued version of Agatha as the nosy neighbor Agnes. “We emphasized her mischievous magic, sarcasm, and complexity while exploring the mysterious side of witchcraft,” Hahn notes.

The show centers on Agatha’s journey as she constructs her own coven, joined by various witches—each representing different magical domains—as well as a non-witch character. Through cooperation and community, the characters aim to rediscover their inner strengths and navigate their challenges.

In terms of production, *Agatha All Along* emphasizes practical effects, a decision supported by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Schaeffer highlights the inspiration drawn from classic films, aiming to create a tangible sense of magic that contrasts with computer-generated imagery.

As the series approaches its release, Hahn shares her hopes for audience reactions, wanting viewers to experience humor, surprise, and emotional connections with the witches. She reflects on the importance of community in reclaiming one’s power, a significant lesson for Agatha’s character.
