During the opening session of the 48th African Union (AU) Executive Council, H.E. Ymahmoud Ali, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, emphasized the critical need for institutional reform and the importance of fostering peace and development across the continent in preparation for the upcoming 39th AU Assembly.
Ali highlighted the central theme of this year’s discussions centered on water and sanitation, emphasizing that these essential resources must be regarded as shared assets and mechanisms for cooperation, particularly in the face of climate change challenges.
He also provided an update on ongoing reforms under the 2024–2028 Plan, which include developments in the peace and security architecture, advancements in sustainable financing, and efforts toward institutional strengthening. While he acknowledged that countries like Gabon and Guinea have restored constitutional order, he expressed concerns over the lingering threats of instability and terrorism in certain regions.
The Chairperson reiterated that both the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and AU institutions play a pivotal role in driving continental integration. He underscored the need for innovative financing and stronger collaborations with Africa’s private sector and civil society to support these initiatives.
In closing, Ali expressed gratitude to the Republic of Angola for her leadership of the Executive Council, noting that Angola currently holds the chairmanship of the AU. His remarks reflect a hopeful vision for Africa’s future, centered on proactive leadership and strategic goals to navigate the continent’s challenges and opportunities.
