A new redevelopment initiative in East New York has commenced, aimed at providing over 2,000 affordable housing units on the campus of the Christian Cultural Center. This ambitious project, dubbed the Innovative Urban Village, broke ground on Tuesday and promises to include a child care space, senior services, and a performing arts center alongside the housing units.
The first phase of construction will focus on a 385-unit affordable housing development, which will also feature commercial areas for a grocery store. These units are intended for households earning between 30% and 80% of the area median income, with 94 units specifically allocated for families needing support services, such as case management and nutritional assistance, particularly targeting formerly homeless residents.
Governor Kathy Hochul, who attended the groundbreaking, emphasized the significance of addressing the housing affordability crisis. She expressed her commitment to ensuring that every individual finds a dignified residence, stating, “I believe to my core that every human being deserves dignity, a safe, secure roof over their heads.”
Rev. Alfonso R. Bernard of the Christian Cultural Center highlighted that this project, many years in the making, represents more than just housing; it signifies a collective responsibility to alleviate the burdens of inequity. He reinforced the vision of local governments working compassionately in collaboration with faith organizations and the private sector to support education and create jobs.
City Councilmember Chris Banks referred to the project as a “transformative investment,” one that is vital for sustaining neighborhoods and fostering generational wealth in Black and brown communities.
Funding for the Innovative Urban Village will come from various sources, including state tax credit programs and housing initiatives from both state and city levels as well as contributions from the Urban Investment Group at Goldman Sachs Alternatives.
This project not only promises to increase affordable housing options in Brooklyn but also aims to enrich community resources and amenities, signifying a hopeful step toward enhanced living conditions and opportunities for local residents.
