The Whisper Group and Mark Stewart Productions are teaming up with Artists Equity to create a riveting documentary titled “Turbulence: The Greatest Mind in Formula One,” centered around renowned race car designer Adrian Newey. The film will closely follow Newey’s journey as he aids the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team in their quest for competitive success. Produced in association with both Aston Martin Aramco and Formula One, the title may eventually change as it is currently a working title.
Ben Affleck, CEO of Artists Equity, expressed that the documentary transcends the realm of racing. He noted, “It’s about a living legend whose unrivaled career is full of ambition and reinvention.”
With an impressive track record that includes 12 World Constructors’ Championships and 14 World Drivers’ Championships, Newey is recognized as one of the most influential figures in racing. His decision to leave Red Bull and join Aston Martin Aramco in early 2025 surprised many fans.
“Hopefully this film can portray the passion, the working practice, the strength of mind that is involved in bringing an F1 car to the grid,” said Newey. He emphasized that the documentary will explore the challenges he faces when joining a new team amid a significant regulatory overhaul in F1. Additionally, it will recount his distinguished career and the experiences that have equipped him for this substantial undertaking. “It’s been a wild ride so far, but F1 never stands still,” he added.
The film will see Affleck and his Artists Equity co-founder Matt Damon serve as executive producers, along with Kyle Wheeler, who oversees unscripted projects for the company. Additional executive producers include Brian Venturo, Stephen O’Connor, Drew Masters, Chris Grubb, Sunil Patel, and Emma Everitt from Whisper, as well as Mark Stewart from MSP. The project will be directed by Patrick Mark and Michael Tolajian.
Artists Equity, established in 2022 in partnership with Gerry Cardinale from RedBird Capital, has set a strong precedent with recent productions like “Air,” featuring Damon and Affleck, as well as “The Instigators” and the highly anticipated “The Accountant 2.”
As the documentary aims to dive into the complexities and intricacies of Formula One, it promises to offer fans a unique perspective on the world of racing and the brilliance of its greatest minds. This collaboration not only highlights Newey’s legacy but also serves as an inspiration for future innovators in the sport.
