Derek Dixon, an actor recognized for his role in Tyler Perry’s political drama “The Oval,” has publicly detailed serious allegations against the renowned actor and filmmaker, claiming incidents of sexual harassment and assault. In a lawsuit filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court on June 13, Dixon accuses Perry of using his influence within the entertainment industry to create a coercive and exploitative dynamic while Dixon was employed on the show.
Dixon expressed the importance of his decision to come forward, stating, “the next generation of actors and creatives don’t have to choose between their dreams and their dignity.” He confronted intense backlash after filing his suit, including receiving death threats, which he cites as a reason why many victims, particularly men, hesitate to disclose their experiences. He spent a long time trying to convince himself that he had to tolerate such behavior to maintain his career.
The lawsuit claims that Perry, 55, made initial promises of career advancement and opportunities to Dixon, but later subjected him to escalating instances of harassment and assault when Dixon did not reciprocate his advances. Dixon alleges that Perry’s actions included climbing into bed with him and physically groping him after drinking, as well as subsequent assaults when they were staying at Perry’s guest house.
Perry’s legal representation has categorically denied the allegations, characterizing the claims as fabricated and suggesting that Dixon’s actions were motivated by ulterior motives aimed at financial gain. Perry’s lawyer has proclaimed confidence that the charges will ultimately fail.
According to the lawsuit, Dixon first interacted with Perry in 2019 while assisting with an event for Tyler Perry Studios. After becoming involved with “The Oval,” Dixon claims Perry escalated the harassment, including sending sexually suggestive messages even after Dixon expressed disinterest.
Dixon is pursuing $260 million in damages as well as legal fees, underscoring the serious impact these alleged encounters have had on his mental and physical health, including diagnoses of PTSD.
