Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has publicly condemned the violent attack on government officials in Vusasivo, Cakaudrove. The incident involved a group that reportedly pelted a government vehicle with stones and assaulted civil servants while they were performing their duties. Vosarogo characterized the aggression as “totally unacceptable,” emphasizing the importance of respecting civil servants who provide essential services to the community.
He warned against harming these officials, stating, “Do not touch civil servants. They come to work for you.” The Acting Prime Minister pointed out that hostility towards civil servants can severely damage community relations, potentially leading to a withdrawal of services if officials feel unsafe while carrying out their responsibilities. He called attention to the persistent issue of harassment faced by public workers, including healthcare professionals and educators, and declared that such behavior must end. “It will not be tolerated. Treat your civil servants with civility and respect,” he stated firmly.
In response to the recent violence, the Commissioner of Police has been instructed to form a dedicated team from Savusavu to conduct investigations and make arrests. Vosarogo encouraged civil servants to seek police escorts in areas where they might face dangers, noting that while it is crucial for them to provide services, their safety is the highest priority.
He also conveyed his best wishes to the injured officials, noting that most have been released from the hospital, though one remains hospitalized. Vosarogo expressed hope for their rapid recovery and assured that the government is dedicated to ensuring that all individuals involved in the assaults will face legal consequences.
