Ace Frehley, Kiss Co-Founder, Dies at 74 Amid Tributes

Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley passed away on October 16 at the age of 74, with the Morris County Medical Examiner in New Jersey attributing his death to blunt trauma injuries sustained from a fall. The circumstances surrounding his passing have been ruled accidental.

Frehley’s family expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt statement, noting their devastation and heartbreak. They shared that in his final moments, they were able to surround him with love, which brought comfort to them during this difficult time. “We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others,” they said. They reflected on how Ace’s legacy will endure through his remarkable life achievements.

Frehley, affectionately known as “Spaceman,” leaves behind a daughter, Monique, from his marriage to ex-wife Jeanette Trerotola. His passing has reverberated through the music community, prompting tributes from fellow Kiss members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, who described him as an “essential and irreplaceable rock soldier” in the formative years of the band. They extended their thoughts to Frehley’s family and fans worldwide, underscoring his lasting impact on Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Co-founding Kiss in 1973 with Simmons, Stanley, and Peter Criss, Frehley departed the band in 1982. Subsequently, he embarked on a solo career and created the band Frehley’s Comet. He later reunited with Kiss for a tour in 1996, remaining with the band until 2002. Just weeks prior to his death, it was announced that Frehley and his former bandmates would be honored at the Kennedy Center in 2025, a recognition he was excited about.

Hours before his death, Frehley’s health condition drew concern after he had been placed on life support due to a brain bleed resulting from a fall earlier in September. He had previously cancelled performances due to ongoing medical issues from the incident. Following his hospitalization, Frehley made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining tour dates for 2025.

A memorial service took place last month in Frehley’s native Bronx, attended by family and the surviving members of Kiss. Music personality Eddie Trunk, who attended the service, shared that it was an emotional farewell to a rock icon and a longtime friend. He also mentioned plans for a tribute show to celebrate Frehley’s legacy in the future, highlighting the influence he had on fans and aspiring musicians alike.

Frehley will undoubtedly be remembered not only for his contributions to rock music and his role in Kiss but also for the joy and passion he brought to fans across the globe. His legacy is one of profound impact, and as Eddie Trunk suggested, honoring and celebrating his life and contributions is a fitting tribute for such an influential figure in music history.
