Abigail Disney’s Surprising Political Shift: What’s Next for the Democrats?

Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has officially exited the presidential race. Disney, whose grandfather was a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, had previously declared earlier this month that she would halt contributions until there was a change at the top of the ticket.

In a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” after Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president. When she originally decided to withhold donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, emphasizing the vice president’s qualifications.

“We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot,” she stated.

Disney’s discontent with Biden surfaced after his poor performance in a debate against former President Donald Trump, prompting her and several other prominent Democratic donors to push back against his campaign. Reports suggested that the pressure from elite donors and a decline in fundraising contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Notably, billionaire George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also endorsed Harris following Biden’s announcement.
