Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will restart her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection.
Earlier in the month, Disney had declared that she would halt contributions until Biden was replaced on the ticket. However, in an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her intention to resume support following Biden’s exit and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency.
When she initially announced her decision to withhold funds, Disney expressed her support for Harris as a strong candidate. She remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several prominent Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s performance, particularly after a contentious debate with former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from influential donors contributed to Biden’s decision to step aside. George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also pledged their support for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
