Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she plans to resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has withdrawn his candidacy for reelection.
Previously, Disney had declared she would suspend her donations until the party replaced Biden at the top of the ticket. In a message to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her decision to support the party again, now that Biden has stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency.
When she first announced her intention to halt donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney had joined a wave of prominent Democratic donors who became disenchanted with Biden, particularly following his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from top donors and a decline in financial support contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Notably, prominent figures like George Soros and his son Alex Soros also endorsed Harris after Biden announced his exit.
