Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection. Earlier this month, she stated that she would halt contributions until the party replaced Biden at the top of the ticket.
In an email to CNBC, Disney confirmed her decision, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidential nomination. When she first declared her intention to withhold donations, Disney expressed her backing for Harris.
Disney praised Harris, saying, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s… and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several elite Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden following a poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from major donors and a decline in fundraising contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Prominent donors like George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also declared their support for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
