Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Earlier this month, Disney stated that she would halt her financial support for the party until a new candidate was named to lead the ticket. In a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate.
When she initially announced her decision to withhold donations, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s qualifications. She remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney’s decision to withhold contributions came after many elite Democratic donors expressed dissatisfaction with Biden, particularly following his poor debate performance against Donald Trump. Reports have suggested that the pressure from this donor class played a part in Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Other notable Democratic donors, including George Soros and his son Alex Soros, have also endorsed Kamala Harris in light of Biden’s exit.
