Abigail Disney Shifts Support: A New Era for Democratic Donors?

Abigail Disney, a prominent heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, has announced her intention to resume financial support for the Democratic Party, following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Disney previously stated that she would halt all contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket.

In a recent email to CNBC, Disney confirmed her resumption of support, stating that she is backing Vice President Kamala Harris, who Biden endorsed as his successor. Earlier this month, she expressed her dissatisfaction with Biden’s leadership, emphasizing her belief in Harris’s capabilities.

Disney pointed out that Democrats need to fully rally behind Harris, noting that if the party accepted her alleged shortcomings with even a fraction of the leniency afforded to Biden, they could secure a decisive victory in the upcoming election.

Her decision comes as part of a broader backlash among elite Democratic donors against Biden, particularly after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that this push from key donors contributed to Biden’s exit from the race. Notably, financier George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also voiced their support for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
