Abigail Disney, an heiress with deep ties to the Walt Disney Company, has announced that she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection.
Earlier this month, Disney stated she would withhold contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket. In a message to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her change of heart, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency.
When she initially decided to halt her donations, Disney had already expressed her backing for Harris. She emphasized the Vice President’s qualifications, saying, “We have an excellent Vice President,” and criticized how the Democratic Party has handled support for women and people of color compared to Biden’s record. She urged Democrats to unify and support Harris, suggesting that such solidarity could lead to a significant victory in the upcoming election.
Disney’s discontent with Biden’s leadership was echoed by other prominent Democratic donors, including George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, who also endorsed Harris after Biden’s withdrawal from the race. Reports indicated that the pressure from major donors and a lack of financial support contributed to Biden’s decision.
