Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she plans to resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection.
In recent comments, Disney, whose grandfather co-founded The Walt Disney Company, had previously stated she would halt her contributions until Biden was replaced as the Democratic nominee. Following Biden’s withdrawal and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president, Disney confirmed in an email to CNBC that she would begin supporting the party again.
When she initially suspended her donations, Disney expressed strong backing for Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several prominent Democratic Party donors who pushed back against Biden following his poor debate performance against Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from donors and a decline in funding contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Additionally, billionaire George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also voiced their support for Harris after Biden’s announcement.
