Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced she would resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has stepped away from his reelection campaign.
Earlier this month, Disney had declared she would halt donations to the party unless Biden was replaced as the candidate. However, in a Monday email to CNBC, she confirmed her renewed support following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
When she initially decided to withhold donations, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among a group of prominent Democratic donors who became disenchanted with Biden after what was viewed as a poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from major donors and declining contributions played a role in Biden’s decision to exit the race. Other high-profile donors including George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also endorsed Harris following Biden’s announcement.
