Abigail Disney, a prominent heiress and granddaughter of one of The Walt Disney Company’s co-founders, has announced her decision to resume financial support for the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to not seek reelection. Earlier this month, Disney had stated she would halt her contributions until Biden was replaced as the party’s candidate.
In a response to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidential race. Disney had previously expressed her support for Harris, highlighting her belief in the Vice President’s capabilities.
Disney criticized the Democratic Party for its treatment of Harris compared to Biden, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several elite Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden, particularly after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from major contributors and dwindling financial support influenced Biden’s choice to step aside. Following Biden’s announcement, notable figures like George Soros and his son Alex Soros also voiced their endorsement of Harris.
