Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Disney previously stated that she would halt her financial support until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket.
In an email sent to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her renewed support, indicating that she would back Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been endorsed by Biden after his exit from the race.
Disney had previously expressed her support for Harris, emphasizing the vice president’s qualifications and urging the Democratic Party to rally around her candidacy. She noted that if the party could overlook some of Harris’s perceived shortcomings as they have with Biden, they would have a strong chance of winning the upcoming election.
Disney was among several prominent Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s leadership, particularly following his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that the pressure from major donors played a role in Biden’s decision to step aside. Notably, philanthropist George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also pledged their support for Harris in light of Biden’s announcement.
