Abigail Disney, heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced she will resume donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the reelection race. In a recent email to CNBC, Disney confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” after Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.
Earlier in the month, Disney had declared her intention to stop contributions until there was a leadership change at the top. She also expressed her support for Harris, emphasizing the potential for a successful campaign if the Democratic Party unites behind her. “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot,” she remarked.
Disney’s decision to withhold donations was part of a broader discontent among prominent Democratic donors following Biden’s poor performance in a debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from high-profile financiers played a role in Biden’s decision to step aside from the race. Notably, George Soros and his son, Alex, have also endorsed Harris in light of Biden’s withdrawal.
