Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Previously, Disney stated that she would suspend her donations until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket. In a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency.
When she initially withheld her donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, praising her as an excellent Vice President. She criticized the party for not fully embracing Harris despite the challenges she faces compared to Biden, highlighting issues of race and gender in the political landscape. Disney believes that if the Democratic Party can unite behind Harris, they have a strong chance of winning the election.
Disney was among a group of prominent Democratic donors who became discontented with Biden following his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that the dissatisfaction from the donor class contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Notably, financier George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also endorsed Harris after Biden’s announcement.
