Heiress Abigail Disney announced that she will reinstate her donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Disney, a prominent figure whose grandfather co-founded The Walt Disney Company, had previously stated she would halt contributions until Biden stepped aside.
In an email to CNBC on Monday, Disney confirmed her intention to support the party again now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidential nomination. Earlier this month, when she declared her withdrawal of support, Disney also expressed her backing for Harris.
Disney highlighted the strengths of Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Her decision to withhold donations was shared by other elite Democratic donors who similarly reacted to Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that mounting pressure from the donor community and a decline in financial support contributed to Biden’s choice to exit the race. Notably, George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also voiced their support for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
