Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has chosen to withdraw from the 2024 election.
In an email to CNBC on Monday, Disney confirmed her support following Biden’s decision to step aside and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor for the presidential candidacy. Earlier this month, Disney had publicly stated that she would cease her contributions until there was a change at the top of the party ticket.
Disney, whose grandfather was a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, had also expressed her support for Harris at that time. She emphasized the Vice President’s qualifications and urged Democrats to unite behind her. “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s… and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot,” she said.
Disney’s previous decision to halt donations came amid discontent among Democratic elites over Biden’s performance, particularly after a disappointing debate against former President Donald Trump. The donor class’s frustration and dwindling financial support were significant factors that contributed to Biden’s withdrawal from the race. Other prominent donors, including George Soros and his son Alex Soros, have also signaled their support for Kamala Harris in light of Biden’s announcement.
