Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection. Earlier this month, Disney had indicated her intention to halt contributions unless Biden stepped aside for a new candidate.
In a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed her support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. When she previously withheld donations, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, emphasizing the Vice President’s strengths and calling for party unity.
Disney noted, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), we can win this election by a lot.”
Her decision to withdraw support was part of a broader dissatisfaction among elite Democratic donors, particularly in light of Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that significant pressure from these donors contributed to Biden’s choice to withdraw from the race. Following Biden’s announcement, prominent donors like George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also endorsed Harris.
