Abigail Disney Revives Donations: A New Era for Democratic Support?

Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, has announced her intention to recommence donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek re-election.

Earlier in the month, she had stated that she would cease her contributions to the party until Biden was replaced as the presidential nominee. Following Biden’s withdrawal and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president, Disney confirmed her renewed support in an email to CNBC.

In her earlier remarks about withholding donations, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s qualifications. She noted, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”

Disney was among several prominent Democratic donors who voiced their discontent with Biden after his poor performance in a debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that the dissatisfaction within the donor class and the dwindling financial support contributed to Biden’s decision to step aside. Following Biden’s announcement, influential donors like George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their endorsement for Harris.
