Abigail Disney Revives Donations: A New Era for Democratic Support?

Heiress Abigail Disney has announced her return to donating to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the race for reelection. Disney, whose grandfather co-founded The Walt Disney Company, had previously stated that she would halt contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket.

In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her decision, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s exit and endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president. Disney had also expressed her support for Harris when she initially decided to withhold donations.

“We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot,” Disney remarked.

She was among various prominent Democratic donors who reacted negatively to Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from influential donors and dwindling funds contributed to Biden’s decision to exit the race. Following Biden’s announcement, notable supporters such as George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also voiced their endorsement for Harris.
