Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced she will restart her donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to not seek reelection. Earlier in the month, Disney had stated she would withhold contributions until Biden was replaced as the candidate for the party.
In an email to CNBC on Monday, Disney confirmed her return to supporting the party, as Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. At the time of her previous announcement to suspend donations, Disney also expressed her backing for Harris.
Disney highlighted the Vice President’s qualifications, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
She was among several elite Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that mounting pressure from donors and a decline in funds contributed to Biden’s decision to exit the race. Following Biden’s announcement, prominent donors like George Soros and Alex Soros also offered their support for Harris.
