Abigail Disney Revives Democratic Donations After Biden’s Exit: What’s Next?

Heiress Abigail Disney has announced her intention to resume donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has opted not to seek reelection. Disney, whose grandfather was a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, previously stated she would suspend her financial contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket.

In an email to CNBC, she confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s withdrawal and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. When she initially chose to withhold donations, Disney also publicly supported Harris, praising her as an “excellent Vice President.”

Disney expressed her belief that the Democratic Party should rally behind Harris and noted the discrepancy in how the party has handled Biden’s perceived shortcomings compared to those of Harris, highlighting issues of race and gender in that inequality.

She was among a group of elite Democratic donors who grew disillusioned with Biden, particularly after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from donors and a decrease in funding contributed to Biden’s decision to exit the race.

Additionally, prominent donor George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also backed Harris following Biden’s announcement.
