Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she plans to resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has exited the 2024 presidential race.
Earlier this month, Disney declared that she would halt her contributions to the party unless Biden stepped aside as the candidate. Following Biden’s withdrawal and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, she communicated to CNBC on Monday, “Yes, I will resume supporting.”
When making her initial decision to withhold donations, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, praising her leadership. She noted, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney joined a number of prominent Democratic donors who turned against Biden after his poor performance in a debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from influential donors contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Following Biden’s announcement, financier George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their support for Kamala Harris.
