Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, has announced her intention to resume donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has exited the 2024 presidential race. Earlier this month, she had declared that she would halt any contributions until the party replaced Biden as its candidate.
In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her decision, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. Disney had previously expressed her support for Harris, noting the Vice President’s qualifications.
Disney commented on the need for the Democratic Party to rally around Harris, criticizing the uneven support Biden received compared to Harris, citing issues of race and gender in the party’s dynamics. She emphasized that a united front could lead to a significant victory in the upcoming election.
Disney was among various prominent Democratic donors who grew dissatisfied with Biden after his poor performance in a debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from the donor class and diminishing financial support contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race.
Notably, George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their endorsement for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
