Abigail Disney Reverses Course: A New Era for Democratic Donations?

Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek reelection. Disney, whose grandfather co-founded The Walt Disney Company, previously stated she would halt contributions until the party found a new candidate.

In an email to CNBC on Monday, Disney confirmed, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” after Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. Earlier this month, she expressed her support for Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s capabilities.

Disney argued that if Democrats could accept Harris’s perceived shortcomings with the same leniency they tolerated Biden’s, they could significantly improve their chances in the upcoming election. She criticized the party for the inequity in their treatment of race and gender, suggesting that rallying around Harris could lead to success.

Her decision to pause donations was part of a broader discontent among elite donors in the Democratic Party, largely stemming from Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from donors and dwindling funds played a role in Biden’s withdrawal from the race. Notably, billionaire donor George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also endorsed Harris in light of the recent developments.
