Abigail Disney Returns to the Democratic Fold: What’s Behind Her Support for Kamala Harris?

Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection. She had previously declared that she would halt her contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket.

In an email to CNBC on Monday, Disney confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president. Earlier this month, Disney had also expressed her backing for Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s capabilities.

Disney criticized the Democratic Party for not rallying around Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s… if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”

Disney was among several high-profile Democratic donors who experienced dissatisfaction with Biden after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from influential donors and declining financial support contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Following Biden’s announcement, notable figures like George Soros and his son Alex Soros also endorsed Harris.
