Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, announced she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has exited the race for re-election.
Earlier this month, Disney indicated she would halt her contributions until a new candidate was put forth. In a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed her renewed support following Biden’s decision to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the presidential candidate.
When she made her initial announcement to withdraw her donations, Disney had already expressed her backing for Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among a group of prominent Democratic donors who criticized Biden after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from the donor community and reduced funding contributed to Biden’s decision to step away from the campaign.
Additionally, notable philanthropist George Soros and his son Alex Soros have also voiced their support for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
