Abigail Disney Resumes Support for Democrats: What’s Behind the Shift?

Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has chosen to withdraw from the presidential race.

Earlier this month, Disney stated that she would halt her donations until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket. In a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s decision to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency.

When she initially decided to withhold funds, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, praising her as an excellent Vice President. She criticized the Democratic Party for failing to support Harris in the same way they have with Biden, highlighting issues of race and gender in the party’s dynamics. Disney emphasized that if the party could unify around Harris, they could secure a significant victory in the upcoming election.

Disney was part of a group of elite Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden after what was deemed a poor debate performance against Donald Trump. Reports suggest that mounting pressure from major donors contributed to Biden’s decision to step aside. Following Biden’s exit from the race, notable figures like George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also endorsed Kamala Harris.
