Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection.
Earlier this month, Disney expressed her intention to halt contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket. In a message to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her plan to restart donations following Biden’s withdrawal and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.
When she previously announced her decision to pause contributions, Disney had also shown her support for Harris. She stated, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings just a fraction as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quarreling and rally around her, we can win this election decisively.”
Disney was among several prominent Democratic donors who became disillusioned with Biden after his underwhelming debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from the donor class and a decrease in funding contributed to Biden’s decision to step aside. Notably, financier George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also pledged their support for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
