Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection.
In a recent statement, Disney, whose grandfather co-founded The Walt Disney Company, had previously declared she would halt contributions to the party until a new candidate replaced Biden at the top of the ticket. However, following Biden’s withdrawal and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president, Disney confirmed her support in an email to CNBC, saying, “Yes, I will resume supporting.”
When she initially chose to withhold donations, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several elite Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden after his poor debate performance against Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from major donors and a decline in financial support were contributing factors to Biden’s decision to step back from the 2024 race. Following Biden’s announcement, prominent figures such as George Soros and his son Alex Soros also voiced their support for Harris.
