Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, has announced her intention to resume donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has ended his reelection campaign.
Earlier this month, Disney stated she would cease contributions to the party until a new candidate replaced Biden at the top of the ticket. Following Biden’s withdrawal and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, she confirmed in an email to CNBC that she would begin supporting the party again.
When she initially declared her decision to withhold donations, Disney also expressed her support for Harris. She remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several prominent Democratic donors frustrated with Biden’s performance, particularly following a poor debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from major donors and a decline in financial support contributed to Biden’s decision to exit the race. Notably, financier George Soros and his son Alex Soros also expressed their endorsement of Harris after Biden’s announcement.
