Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will reinstate her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has chosen to withdraw from the presidential race.
Earlier this month, Disney indicated her intent to halt contributions until the party replaced Biden at the top of the ticket. However, following Biden’s exit and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency, she confirmed in an email to CNBC that she would resume her support.
When she initially declared her decision to stop donations, Disney also expressed her backing for Harris. She stated, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s, and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was not alone in her discontent, as several prominent Democratic donors voiced their dissatisfaction with Biden after his underwhelming debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from the donor class and a decrease in funding contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw. Notably, philanthropist George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also endorsed Harris following Biden’s announcement.
