Abigail Disney Resumes Donations: A Shift in Democratic Support?

Heiress Abigail Disney announced she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the reelection race. Disney, whose grandfather co-founded The Walt Disney Company, previously stated that she would halt her contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket.

In an email to CNBC, she confirmed her decision to support the party again, now that Biden has stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president. At the time of her initial announcement to withhold donations, Disney also expressed her backing for Harris.

Disney emphasized the capabilities of the Vice President, noting, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s—and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender fit into that inequity—and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”

She was one of several prominent Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden following his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that the pressure from the donor base and a decline in funding contributed to Biden’s decision to exit the race. George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their support for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
