Abigail Disney, the heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Earlier this month, Disney had stated her intention to halt contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket. In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her renewed support, saying, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has exited the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
When she initially announced her decision to withhold donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, praising her capabilities as Vice President. She highlighted the double standards in how the party treats the perceived shortcomings of Harris compared to Biden, suggesting that if the party could unite behind Harris, they would have a strong chance of winning the election.
Disney joined a number of prominent Democratic donors who expressed discontent with Biden’s leadership after what many viewed as a poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that the dissatisfaction among the donor class and dwindling funds contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw. In addition to Disney, financier George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also endorsed Harris following Biden’s announcement.
