Abigail Disney Restores Support: What’s Next for Democrats?

Abigail Disney, heiress and granddaughter of one of The Walt Disney Company’s co-founders, announced that she will resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

Earlier in the month, Disney had declared that she would suspend donations until Biden was replaced on the ticket. In a response to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her renewed support, stating her backing for Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Biden has endorsed as his successor for the presidency.

Disney previously expressed her support for Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s qualifications and stressing that the Democratic Party should unite behind her to increase their chances of winning the upcoming election. She pointed out the disparities in how the Democratic Party has treated Harris compared to Biden, mentioning issues of race and gender as factors in those dynamics.

Disney was among several high-profile Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden, particularly after what was viewed as a poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that the pressure from donors and the resulting decrease in funding were factors that influenced Biden’s decision to exit the race.

Notably, George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also voiced their support for Harris following the announcement of Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential campaign.
