Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to run for reelection.
Disney, the granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, previously stated that she would halt contributions to the party until Biden stepped aside. In a message to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her decision to support the party again, expressing approval since Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the presidential candidate.
When she initially decided to stop her donations, Disney showed her backing for Harris, highlighting the Vice President’s strengths. She remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s—and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity—if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several prominent Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s leadership, especially after his poor performance in a debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from major donors and a decline in funding contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race.
Following Biden’s announcement, prominent financier George Soros and his son Alex Soros also endorsed Harris as the Democratic candidate.
