Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has exited the 2024 presidential race.
Earlier this month, Disney, a member of the family that co-founded The Walt Disney Company, had declared she would halt her donations until a new candidate was selected to lead the party. In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency.
When she first made her decision to withdraw funding, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, asserting, “We have an excellent Vice President.” She criticized the party’s support for Biden, suggesting that if Democrats could embrace Harris with the same understanding of her challenges as they had with Biden, they could achieve a significant electoral victory.
Disney’s shift in support comes amid growing discontent among prominent Democratic donors following Biden’s lackluster debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from this donor elite and dwindling financial support contributed to Biden’s decision to step aside.
Notably, billionaire George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their endorsement of Harris after Biden’s announcement regarding his withdrawal from the race.
