Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, has announced that she will recommence her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has exited the presidential race. Disney previously declared that she would halt her contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the Democratic ticket.
In a statement to CNBC, Disney confirmed her decision by stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. Earlier this month, Disney had expressed her backing for Harris, emphasizing the Vice President’s capabilities.
Disney remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s—and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity—if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Her initial decision to withhold donations was influenced by Biden’s poor performance in a debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from prominent donors and dwindling financial support contributed to Biden’s decision to step down from the race.
Following the announcement of Biden’s withdrawal, George Soros and his son Alex also expressed their support for Kamala Harris.
