Abigail Disney, an heiress and activist, announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection. Disney, whose grandfather was a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, had previously stated that she would stop her contributions until the party replaced Biden at the top of the ticket.
In an email to CNBC on Monday, Disney confirmed her renewed support, mentioning her approval of Biden’s decision to step aside and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. Earlier, she had also voiced her backing for Harris, highlighting the need for the Democratic Party to unite behind her.
Disney expressed her belief in Harris’s capabilities, suggesting that if Democrats could overlook perceived shortcomings in the Vice President as they have with Biden, the party could significantly boost its chances in the upcoming election.
Her previous decision to halt donations was part of a larger revolt among elite Democratic donors following Biden’s underwhelming debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from this donor class contributed to Biden’s eventual withdrawal from the race. Notably, prominent figures like George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also supported Harris following Biden’s announcement.
