Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her contributions to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Disney, whose grandfather was a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, previously stated that she would halt her donations until a new candidate was selected to replace Biden at the top of the ticket.
In a recent email to CNBC, Disney confirmed, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor for the presidency. Earlier this month, Disney publicly backed Harris, expressing her belief in the Vice President’s capabilities.
Disney criticized the Democratic Party’s support for Biden, suggesting that the same level of tolerance for perceived shortcomings should also be afforded to Harris, emphasizing the implications of race and gender in this disparity. She urged the party to unite behind Harris to secure a significant electoral win.
Her decision to withdraw funding came after a wave of discontent among elite donors, stemming from Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressure from the donor base played a role in Biden’s exit from the race. Following Biden’s announcement, prominent Democratic donors, including George Soros and his son Alex Soros, also expressed their endorsement for Harris.
