Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has opted not to seek reelection.
Earlier this month, Disney had declared her intention to halt any contributions until Biden stepped aside for a new candidate. Following Biden’s decision to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency, Disney stated in an email to CNBC that she would support the party again.
When she initially announced her decision to withhold donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, emphasizing the Vice President’s qualifications. She criticized the Democratic Party for accepting Biden’s limitations while being less forgiving of Harris’s perceived shortcomings, suggesting that if the party could unite behind Harris, they would have a strong chance of winning the upcoming election.
Disney’s stance reflects a broader dissatisfaction among elite Democratic donors with Biden’s performance, particularly following his lackluster debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from these donors and dwindling financial support contributed to Biden’s decision to exit the race. Notably, prominent donors like George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also endorsed Harris in light of these developments.
